Learning to Fly

The Lancaster County Radio Control Club takes great pride in helping new members discover the excitement and satisfaction of flying radio-controlled aircraft. From the very first visit to the airfield, newcomers are welcomed into a friendly and supportive community of experienced pilots who are eager to share their knowledge. The club understands that learning to fly can seem overwhelming at first, so it offers a structured, hands-on approach to help beginners gain confidence both on the ground and in the air.

Certified club instructors work closely with each student to teach the fundamentals of safe flying, proper field etiquette, and the technical aspects of operating model aircraft.

Lessons typically begin with ground school instruction—covering preflight inspections, radio setup, and the importance of flight safety. Instructors provide one-on-one guidance at the flying field, helping them master takeoffs, turns, and landings. The club will also offers advice on plane selection, ensuring that each beginner starts with an aircraft that’s suited to their skill level and learning pace.

While the Lancaster County Radio Control Club provides excellent instruction and resources, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to take initiative in their training. New pilots are encouraged to contact instructors and arrange mutually convenient times to meet at the field for flying sessions.

Consistent practice and communication are key to developing good piloting habits. With the club’s support and the student’s dedication, new members can quickly progress from their first flight to confidently flying solo—joining a proud tradition of model aviation enthusiasts in Lancaster County.

After becoming a member of the LCRCC, we recommend you contact the Chief Pilot and schedule a meeting for training.  This is often best done during one of the monthly meetings held the first Thursday of each month.
